Government Shutdown? The Budget Was Already Approved: or Was It?
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Another
story proving that the government of the United States is the most corrupt and
incompetent in the world of developed nations.
Our country
is facing another government shutdown. Wait a minute. In March, 2024, the
Senate approved the 2024 national budget of 1.2 trillion dollars. The House voted
in favor of the bill just days before. Only three months into a new year, and
Congress finally did its job.
In any other
developed nation in the world, this would be the end of an agreement which
decided how much money would be spent and where it would go. Not in the United
States.
Only in
America, there is a “debt limit” which must be agreed to by both parties prior
to the end of the fiscal year, September 30, 2024. If you don’t understand any
of this, you are not alone. I doubt that many of our elected officials could give you a
reasonable explanation.
What I do
know as a taxpayer is that one party, (usually Republicans), decided that they
want changes in the budget related to where the funds will go and how much. In
other words, in March they signed an agreement to disagree at a later date. I
can’t make this shit up.
Over the
last decade, right-wing politicians have played games with the threat of
shutting down the government in the balance. It began in 2013 when first-year
Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas made it his goal to shut down the
government. He has only become worse.
PLAYING POLITICS
WITH PEOPLE’S LIVES
For more
than 10 years those who call themselves “Republicans” played politics with the
lives of our nation’s people. Remember, Congress receives their paychecks if
the men and women who do all the work in our government do not. Our elected
politicians have no concern about a government shutdown: it has no effect on
their lives.
HOW BAD CAN
IT GET?
Here’s one situation
for you to think about.
I am no fan
of the TSA. It is an inefficient agency which is too expensive and cannot be
trusted to save our nation from another terrorist attack. However, the men and
women who work for the TSA will be forced to continue working if the government
is shut down, but without pay. Is this the American way of life as intended by
our Founding Fathers?
Change is
not just needed, it is mandatory. Our government does not work. It is clear that
term limits and more stringent requirements about required work hours must be
forced upon the worst government in the world. They should earn their base pay
of $174,000 each year.
