Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart   Did you watch yesterday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs? If you did, you witnessed another low in NFL officiating. Yes, the Chiefs won, but not because the game was fairly called by Roger Goodell’s incompetent officials. Missed calls once again could have decided the game. Yes, Chiefs receivers dropped balls, again, and yes, the offensive line cost them at least one touchdown with the commission of a penalty. However, a national audience once again witnessed the many failures of the worst officiating team in professional sports. Although the Chiefs were significantly violated by the refs, both teams were harmed by calls and non-calls. This has been the pattern over the entire 2023/2024 season. If coaches or players complain about the officiating, they are fined and even suspended. However, Goodell’s referees are never punished for their incompetence. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart   Over the last 10-15 years, NFL officials have decided the outcome of many games. Bad calls and no calls all too often decide the outcome of games critical to the success of teams and players in a single season. I offer you a few examples. In 2013, Super Bowl XLVII was a contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. Near the end of the game, 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick moved his team in position to win the game. He threw a pass to a receiver standing in the end zone. A Raven defender clearly interfered with the receiver’s opportunity to catch the ball. However, although an official was just a few feet away, no call was made. The Ravens were given a victory. Not only did this failure prevent a Super Bowl win for San Francisco, it prevented Kaepernick from becoming a Super Bowl winning quarterback. A few years later, he was blackballed from the NFL. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart   I watched a lot of NFL football this weekend. I am positive that the league officials I watched refused to go to the NFL sponsored school and instead attended clown college. Overall they were inept and on occasion altered the outcome of a few games. I doubt that most football fans realize that there are no “professional” referees in the NFL. All of them have full-time jobs. Officiating is a “second job” for all of them. They are not trained or held accountable as are the officials in Major League Baseball or the NBA. I have seen playoff games and even Super Bowls lost or won because of the decision of officials who were not watching the same game I was. This is not just wrong, it’s criminal. Roger Goodell’s team cannot be criticized without receiving serious punishment. I began complaining about NFL officials after watching a New England Patriot’s game years ago.
