  Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart You might remember a moronic effort by the worst senator in history, Ted Cruz, a few years ago. He spearheaded an effort to have Texas secede from the Union. I was in favor of his plan. In fact, I am in favor of allowing all red states to secede from the Union. We don’t need any of them, and their governments hate my America. Yesterday we rid our country of one of the worst. Another extremist group of fake Republicans passed a bill banning some of the most important values of American life. [Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday signed legislation that would ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public schools, universities and state agencies and prohibit the teaching of “divisive concepts” including that someone should feel guilty because of their race or gender.] I have watched red states pass racist and bigoted legislation for the last 11 years. Nothing shouldn’t surprise me. However, this level of racism and hatred is far and above the rest.

  Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart   More good news. In fact, it’s a bit surprising, but it is raising my hopes for America’s future. Federal judges, appointed by a conservative president, struck down districting efforts in both Alabama and Florida. Both of these efforts by right-wing extremist state legislators were clearly efforts to suppress votes from Black Americans. On Tuesday a federal judge struck down a redistricting plan written by the right-wing extremist Alabama legislature which violated a prior agreement and an order from the SCOTUS requiring two mostly Black districts based on the demographics. [In another victory for voters, a Florida judge struck down the state’s congressional map over the weekend, ruling that the map — which was pushed through by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) — violates the state constitution by diminishing the voting power of Black Floridians.] If you have ever lived in the Deep South for even a short period of time, you know that the Civil War never ended.
