Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart I was a junior in high school in 1962. As my family always did, we turned on CBS to watch the evening news every evening as we ate dinner on our TV trays. Our small, one bedroom apartment did not have a dining room. There was a new man sitting behind the news desk. His name was Walther Cronkite. From that day forward, we never missed his broadcast. He earned his reputation as “the most trusted man in America.” In those days the only national broadcast networks were CBS, ABC, and NBC. There were local stations in Los Angeles, channels 5, KTLA, channel 9, KCAL, and 11, KTTV. Our most watched networks were CBS and channel 9. Channel 9 had a slogan, “MAYFE,” Movies Are Your Finest Entertainment. Old movies were shown every Friday night, including John Wayne’s westerns and his WWII movies. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart Growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, our family watched television. Not having money for anything other than necessities, this was our only form of entertainment. I remain addicted today. On Monday through Friday, we watched the evening news. It was only one-half hour, and hosted by the great Walter Cronkite: “The most trusted man in America.” This is why it saddens me to tell you that CBS has become part of the “Magaverse.” JUST ANOTHER RIGHT-WING PROPAGANDA MACHINE First, CBS’ parent company, Paramount, owned by Trump’s oligarchs, ended Stephen Colbert’s late-night contract. Although his show was rated #1, he told the truth about Trump and his oligarchs, and that was a mortal sin. More recently, they hired a Trump sycophant, Bari Weiss, as their editor-in-chief of its news division. She revealed her plans for the future of CBS News immediately. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart Two television broadcasts I never missed were “60 Minutes,” and “CBS Sunday Morning.” The Sunday morning broadcast is composed of positive stories about real people and a perfect way to begin a Sunday morning. “60 Minutes” was the only news show I watched because it was a hard-hitting broadcast which exposed the truth about people and things happening in our country and around the world. However, Mike Wallace is turning over in his grave today. My mother, brother, and I watched the CBS evening news every evening in the 1950s and 1960s. Walter Cronkinte informed us of the most important events in just 30 minutes. He was rightfully known as the “most trusted man in America.” The new editor-in-chief of CBS News is a woman by the name of Bari Weiss. She constantly reveals her position as a Trump sycophant as she heavily edits every major production from her network. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart Thursday evening, Stephen Colbert announced that his show, “Late Night with Stephen Colbert,” has been cancelled. CBS management surrendered its First Amendment rights to Fuhrer Donald Trump. Another reason to boycott television news and most networks in general. For ten years Trump has pissed on, shit on, and flushed the Constitution down the toilet. Another thing I never thought would happen has happened. A broadcast network, with all the rights and guarantees of the First Amendment places its profits ahead of the future of our country, and the rights of the people to know the truth about corruption and crime in Washington.
