Why a Democratic Republic?
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart Our Founding Fathers created a new form of government calling it a “Democratic Republic.” Their primary reason for leaving England inspired these courageous men to form a nation ruled by the people. Between 1787 and 1789 at the Constitutional Convention their focus was on issues which would guarantee the rights of all citizens and prevent any rule by a king or any other autocrat. Before they moved to the New Land, King George III declared that the Anglican Church would be the British Empire’s one, true religion. Our Founding Fathers were wealthy and influential men, and for each of them, this was the last violation of their rights they would be forced to endure. Each of them believed in freedom of and freedom from organized religion. To accomplish their lofty goals, they formed a government, calling it a “Democratic Republic.” The people would elect a president as well as the men who would form a legislature.
