He was charismatic, handsome, extremely well-spoken, and inspired both men and women. I was only 14 years old. Obviously, I could not vote, but like most other young Americans, I saw something in then Senator Kennedy which excited me; gave me hope. Democrats feared his candidacy because he was a Catholic. In 1928 Al Smith, also a Catholic and the Democratic presidential nominee, was badly beaten by Republican Herbert Hoover. Similar fears arose on both sides in 2008. Barack Obama was also brilliant, and a great public speaker who inspired everyone who listened to him. However, some Democrats feared that our nation may not have been ready for its first Black President. Republicans were also divided. If every American received complete equality, it would have become a great nation.
