He was charismatic, handsome, extremely well-spoken, and inspired both men and women. I was only 14 years old. Obviously, I could not vote, but like most other young Americans, I saw something in then Senator Kennedy which excited me; gave me hope. Democrats feared his candidacy because he was a Catholic. In 1928 Al Smith, also a Catholic and the Democratic presidential nominee, was badly beaten by Republican Herbert Hoover. Similar fears arose on both sides in 2008. Barack Obama was also brilliant, and a great public speaker who inspired everyone who listened to him.
