Independence Day? Not Yet
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart 249 years ago today, July 4, 1776, our Founding Fathers declared their independence from the country of their birth, England. King George III considered this an act of civil disobedience. We all know what it really was, an act of courage, and a revolt against a powerful and ruthless despot. It required great courage to have faith that the people of the new nation wanted their freedom as much as they did. They rightfully believed that the majority of men and women now living in a new world, a new nation, wanted the same things, freedom from and of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of choice, complete equality, a government which works for people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and protects and encourages open and honest dissent. The rest is literally history. A band of farmers, hunters, merchants, and tradesmen defeated the largest and greatest army in the world because freedom, and individual rights were worth dying for.
