In Europe, a ruthless and ambitious dictator was invading nation after nation and replacing democratic governments with fascist rule. On December 7, 1941, Hawaii was an American territory. It would not become a state until 1959. However, the Emperor of Japan knew that a large percentage of America’s naval forces were docked in one place, and a single, carefully planned attack would cripple or destroy a devastating number of ships designed for war. The next day, the greatest President in American history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, announced that the United States would join our allies in the fight to defeat fascism.
