Anger, Hatred, and Violence are the Policies of All Right-Wing Politicians
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Something happened recently that may mean nothing to you,
but in reality, it defines the direction our government is taking, and
therefore this country is moving down the wrong path.
100 percent of the men and women sitting on the right side
of the Capitol Building support the end of democracy and the establishment of a
fascist regime in Washington. While it is true that Trump, Pence, DeSantis,
Greene, Boebert, Jordan, Gaetz and many others are open about their efforts,
others are hiding in the shadows. Moscow Mitch McConnell, Chuck Grassley, Ron
Johnson, and the rest are silently supporting the most extreme members of their
party.
Today’s fake Republicans control their supporters with
tactics involving anger, hatred, and violence, while accomplishing nothing of
value for the American people.
Capital punishment is a major issue. Most Americans never
think about this subject, but it is important. If human life is of any value,
this archaic form of punishment must be declared unconstitutional. It is also a
sad fact that American penal institutions have the highest rate of recidivism.
Our prisons are focused on punishment, not rehabilitation.
[This past April, Florida joined Alabama, Missouri, and
Indiana to become one of only four states that do not require a unanimous jury
decision in death penalty sentencing. Now, only 8 out of 12 jurors are needed
to send a person to Florida's death row.]
Think about the implications of this decision. Four out of
12 jurors may have strong objections to a death sentence, but they are ignored.
Look at another possibility. When a juror is selected for service and the
accused could face life in prison or death, if they are adamantly opposed to
capital punishment, they might vote not guilty to prevent the death penalty.
Sadly, right-wing politicians lack the intellect to look at the facts and are
willing to pass legislation based on vengeance rather than common sense and justice.
These same men and women are eager to pass laws which suppress voting rights,
and prevent women from having equal rights to men, including decisions which
affect their mental and physical health related to an unwanted presidency.
If you are 40 years old or younger, you don’t remember the
time when America was a country which cherished compassion and understanding,
rather than harboring prejudice and bigotry.
Our nation is not great. Pervasive racism continues to be a
major problem. The fact that America has less than five percent of the world’s
population and more than 25 percent of those incarcerated in facilities for
criminals is one of our country’s greatest shames. Until the United States
joins all other nations and provides free healthcare for all of its citizens, America
will remain a substandard nation. However, nearly one-half of our nation’s
people support white supremacy, misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, and
Islamophobia. These are the reasons our country has never been great and likely
never will be.
