Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart The truth: the American people have not had an effective and caring government since 1981. Under the Reagan administration, the government created by our Founding Fathers between 1787 and 1789 became nothing but a memory. The idea of a “Democratic Republic,” where sincere deliberation and compromise solved many of our nation’s problems, simply disappeared. What was a two-party system ceased to exist. Democrats and Republicans barely spoke to each other. The focus shifted from the people to winning elections and maintaining power. The situation is far worse today than anyone could have imagined. In 2017 it was very clear that one of Trump’s primary goals, agreed upon between him and his Russian puppeteer, was to divide our nation’s people and our government to a level not seen since the Civil War. “Divide and conquer” is Trump’s administration’s mantra. Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart There is an important historical point in America’s 249-year history which I hope will be recognized by everyone in the future. I call it the “Pre-Reagan Period.” Reagan not only moved our nation in a 180-degree turn, away from a progressive direction and into our darker past, he also encouraged dishonesty, refusal to work with their brothers and sisters across the aisle, and the end of transparency in government. There are few, very few in Washington today who have a genuine patriotic attitude and the courage to speak truth to power. One of these individuals is Jasmine Crockett. Ms. Crockett is a congresswoman from the state of Texas. Last Sunday, she made a speech to her supporters and held nothing back, unlike most of our nation’s cowardly politicians.
