The Last “Republican” President Left Office in 1974
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
The Republican Party experienced its final implosion on
January 20, 2017. Its demise began on January 20, 1981. It took 36 years to
complete the process, and under the direction of Vladimir Putin the process reached
its climax when Trump was illegitimately elected by the Electoral College on
November 8, 2016.
This may surprise some of you, but as a lifelong Independent
I can tell you that the last man residing in the White House who supported the
principles and morals of the Grand Old Party, who was a true patriot and cared
for the future of his country was Richard Millhouse Nixon.
If we judge our presidents by their accomplishments and how
they affected the largest number of our nation’s people, the best President by
far was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Included in the top five would be Richard
Nixon. Sadly, what he will be remembered for by historians is his ambition to
receive a second term and the felonies he committed when he approved the
break-in at the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel. Because he
accomplished nothing for our nation’s people in four years, Trump will be
remembered as the worst for eternity.
Here are a some of the most significant accomplishments of
Nixon’s administration. The entire list can be read on the attachment.
In 1973 Nixon signed legislation ending the draft, making
our military forces a voluntary organization.
In 1970 Nixon approved the creation of the Environmental
Protection Agency, an agency opposed by right-wing politicians today.
Nixon dedicated 100 million dollars, beginning the war on
cancer.
It was Nixion who initiated and oversaw the desegregation of
schools in the Deep South.
He lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. In 2023 red states
continue their efforts to suppress voting rights.
Nixon returned land to Native Americans, allowing them to
self-govern their people.
He participated in the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, and
signed the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
Nixon became the first President to visit Communist China and
establish relations with the largest population nation in the world.
I guarantee you that Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W.
Bush, and Trump combined could not claim successes close to those of Mr. Nixon.
What is of great importance is that Nixon resigned in 1974 to prevent great
embarrassment for his country and his party. Trump refuses to do the right thing:
he has refused to do what is right for his entire 77 years.
I do not condone what Nixon did, the reason he was forced to
resign in 1974. However, I wish his party existed today. Our government cannot
exist without two legitimate parties who honestly deliberate the issues and
reach compromise. In simple words, “agree to do what is best for the American
people.”
