Trump, Haley, Cruz, Graham, Jordan, Greene, Boebert, Gaetz, and other Republicans Continue Offering Fodder for Late-Night Comics

Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart

For the last two decades right-wing politicians have proven themselves good for only one thing: fodder for writers on late-night television. Not a single man or woman calling themselves “Republican” in the 21st century is fit to run for office at any level. Now, in 2024, this has become a very sad fact. The only presidential candidates offered by the once Grand Old Party are an obese man who is facing 91 felony indictments, including treason, theft of secret documents, and a lifetime of fraud related to his failed business enterprises, and a woman who lost to “none of these candidates” in the Nevada state primary.

At the age of 77, I remember that if a candidate had an affair or had a divorce in his past, he was forced to withdraw. Trump has had three wives, numerous affairs and unwanted sexual encounters, but Republican voters don’t give a damn. As long as he supports white supremacy, homophobia, Islamophobia, remains a suppressor of women’s rights, he is electable.

Then there’s his party. Today’s Republicans in name only share one thing in common: they have no resemblance to the Grand Old Party of the past. In fact, they are just the opposite. They constantly embarrass themselves and our nation.

The most ridiculous situation came in January of 2003. Throughout our nation’s history, no more than one vote was required to select a Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, Kevin McCarthy suffered through 15 votes before obtaining the gavel. McCarthy was held hostage by the extremist group calling themselves the “Freedom Caucus.” Only after surrendering all of his power to this fascist organization did they agree to vote for him.

Wait, it only gets worse.

Unable to accomplish anything, and after Matt Gaetz used one of the powers McCarthy surrendered, he became the first Speaker ever to be removed from his position on October 3, 2023. This was followed by the nomination of three men. They all removed their names from consideration, knowing they could not receive the necessary votes.

Eventually the Freedom Caucus selected one of their own, Mike Johnson. Johnson continues on a path of failure, a failure so complete one fact proves that those who call themselves “Republicans” are incapable of governing. In 2023 only 34 bills were passed by our nation’s legislative branch. The average is between 200-600 annually. The “party of no” failed the American people, and will continue to do so.

Right-wing politicians are why the government of the United States of America is dysfunctional and broken beyond repair. Only by voting all men and women who call themselves “Republicans” out of office can there be hope for the future.

Those of us who study the ugly world of professional politicians know that our Founding Fathers made several serious mistakes. The two which are responsible for allowing politics to replace service to their country by our elected officials and create the most incompetent and corrupt government in the world are the Electoral College and the decision not to impose term limits on all three branches of our government. “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
