Two Branches of our Federal Government Stand Alone to do Nothing About Domestic Terrorism
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
The latest Gallup poll reveals that at least 56 percent of
all Americans are in favor of strict controls over gun purchases, and banning
assault rifles, high output magazines, and bump stocks.
Several years ago, FBI Director
Christopher Wray sat before congress and informed our elected officials that “domestic
terrorism” is the greatest danger to the American people. The focus was on the
growing number of mass shootings in America. A mass shooting is defined as ‘four
or more individuals wounded or killed in a single incident involving the use of
a gun.’
Over the last seven years, the
number of mass shootings is greater than the number of days on the calendar.
No place is a safe place in
America. Shopping malls, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, movie theaters,
concerts, the workplace, churches, synagogues, mosques, and schools have been
targets for deranged individuals armed with a weapon or weapons of mass
destruction.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY AT THE POINT
OF A GUN
In 2024 Father’s Day weekend was especially
bloody. Beginning on Friday, 73 Americans lost their lives, and 308 were
injured. The saddest part of this story is that no one was shocked. Mass
shootings have become commonplace in the daily lives of the American people.
Mass shootings are so numerous,
most fail to be reported on the first or second pages of whatever news source
you read. If you watch television “news,” you learn about only a small
percentage of the real number. Television “news” has become filled with
opinions and entertainment, not facts. 65 years ago real television journalists
offered only the facts, allowing the viewer to form their own opinions. Today,
what you see on the “boob tube” has no relationship to legitimate broadcasters
from the past. They are overpaid puppets whose interests begin and end with the
demands of their billionaire owners.
FOR THE LEGISLATIVE AND JUDICIAL
BRANCHES, MASS SHOOTINGS ARE JUST “GOOD BUSINESS”
Republicans in the House, Senate,
and six members of the Supreme Court have no concern about the growing number
of mass shootings. In support of the NRA gun lobby, and the gun manufacturers
and gun sellers who own them, they consider these events “good business.” After
every nationally reported mass shooting the sales of guns experience a surge.
Republicans in the legislature
offer the standard, “thoughts and prayers,” and nothing else.
The six Republicans on the Court
recently spit in the face of survivors and family members who lost their loved
ones on October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas during an outdoor concert. The lone
gunman could not have killed 60 people and injured more than 400 if he was not
in the possession of at least a dozen assault rifles, thousands of rounds of
ammunition loaded into high output magazines, and the use of bump stocks making
these deadly weapons automatic machine guns.
A few days ago the Court struck
down a federal law banning bump stocks. There is no way in hell bump stocks are
protected by the Second Amendment.
WHY DO WE HAVE A GOVERNMENT?
When our Founding Fathers created
a Democratic Republic, their intention was to allow the people to select the
men and women who would represent them in Washington. They were expected to
vote according to the needs and wishes of the electorate. This is not even close
to what happens in Washington today.
All Republicans vote as instructed
by lobbyists who represent the super-rich owners of our major corporations.
They have no interest in the needs of the majority with the exception of their
votes during every election year. Non once in my 78 years have I witnessed a
single Republican standing up to the NRA. Profit before People has been the
motto of the government of the United States for more than four decades.
Finally, I treasure the
Constitution, as incomplete and outdated as it is in the 21st
century. This included the Second Amendment. However, 50 years ago I believed
that sensible laws would be passed protecting the American people from gun
violence. The situation has only worsened.
Today, anyone can purchase any
type of deadly weapon whenever they desire. All they need is money. And our
government simply doesn’t care.
I have changed. I now believe
that the Second Amendment must be repealed. It does not relate to life in today’s
America.
It’s time for common sense to
return to America.
