“It’s the Economy, Stupid”
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Beginning with Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, I followed
presidential elections: not in an objective way when I was 10-years-old.
However, after graduating from high school in 1964, I began to look more
closely at the political process. In just three years I would be able to vote,
and I took both the privilege and responsibility seriously.
I enlisted in the USAF in September of 1964, and it was
shortly after that when the Vietnam war escalated. Soon the number of body bags
began to grow. I asked questions like why, who, and how long. There were no
answers, and none remain to this day, with the exception of how long.
I was one of the lucky ones. The military draft would not
end until 1973, and I was not forced into an illegal and controversial war.
TIME AND OBSERVATION ARE GOOD TEACHERS
I was motivated. I had been a freshman in high school when
President John F. Kennedy was elected, and a senior when he was murdered. This
led to my becoming a political junkie.
I began to follow the political process, and therefore the
reasons why some presidential candidates won elections and some lost. In 2024
nothing has changed. Most Americans place the economy first.
ONE AMERICA IS NOT THE RICHEST NATION IN THE WORLD
Most Americans live in the “other America.” In this America,
people struggle to care for their families. We are affected by inflation,
unlike the super-rich who increase their wealth with the suffering of the
majority. When politicians claim that “America is the richest country in the
world, they are referring to the men and women who donate to their campaigns,
and themselves: not to you or me.
The stock market means nothing to the majority, but quality
of life is everything. Inflation is one problem, but a health emergency or
necessary expenditures on a home or automobile can be devastating. Economic
indicators for the rich are extremely different from those of working-class
Americans.
BEST SINCE THE END OF THE 20TH CENTURY
The mainstream media supports right-wing politicians because
they and their employers are millionaires and billionaires. Therefore, I and
others who live in this America will offer you the truth.
Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’ efforts have moved our
economy out of the disasters created by George W. Bush and Donald Trump and
into a level not seen since the Clinton Administration.
Indicators for most Americans involve levels of consumption,
and transactions involving the banking industry. When the working class has
expendable resources, they reinvest in our nation’s economic future by spending
those resources. We are not a nation who saves money, we gladly spend it on
things we do not need.
The super-rich hoard their money in offshore accounts and
spend some on high-end items, such as an additional mansion, a new yacht, a new
private aircraft, a million dollar Bugatti, or a $2,000 bottle of wine to be
served with their dinner.
Inflation is in decline, which raises consumer confidence.
This should result in a landslide victory for Kamala Harris in November, but
with a corrupted fourth estate and lies from Trump and his propaganda machine,
FOX News, the election will likely be close and every vote will count.
Please vote intelligently, which means independently. Vote
for the best candidates, those who will serve you and those you love honestly
and courageously in Washington.
Together, we can save the America of our Founding Fathers
and move bravely into the 21st century.
