This Republican, “Do Nothing Congress,” is Taking a Long Summer Vacation

Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart

A government shutdown could happen at the end of September. Twelve bills were scheduled to come up for a vote within a week. However, Speaker Mike Johnson and his fellow Freedom Caucus cronies decided to cancel next week’s work schedule and begin their six-week summer vacation. What a job: collect a paycheck and do nothing for it.

To date, the 118th Congress has passed just 70 bills. The average is 200-600 per year.

Not only are Republicans incompetent, they refuse to make their own decisions. Trump controls the Freedom Caucus, and tells them how to vote. Non-Freedom Caucus members bow to their demands.

AMERICA’S GOVERNMENT IS THE MOST CORRUPT IN THE FREE WORLD

Only the worst Supreme Court in American history is exempt from the election process. Big mistake. The other 537 government officials in Washington are elected, public servants. The duties of the President, Vice-President, 100 Senators, and 435 members of the House are to serve the needs and wishes of the American people.

Since 1981, Republicans have ignored the people of our country and support special interests. Every major issue supported by the American people has been defeated by today’s fake Republicans for the last 43 years. Right-wing politicians have no idea how to govern, and they don’t care. They serve Putin’s puppet in 2024.

“They can’t pass their own bills. They haven’t been able to pass their own bills all Congress. This is nothing new,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla.

ONLY IN AMERICA

One of the great failures of our federal government concerns the “debt ceiling.”

Over several decades the government of the United States has failed to do its primary job: to keep our government running efficiently. Although a budget is approved in the House each year, Republicans constantly threaten a complete government shutdown by refusing to “raise the debt ceiling.”

In other words, they pass a budget, but refuse to supply the funding to keep it functioning. What the f**k does this mean, and how does this moronic situation continue to happen every year? Only in America.

THE WORD IS “CHANGE”

A single action by our elected officials would end most of the corruption and dysfunction in Washington: term limits for all three branches of our government. Although I have written this many times, it is truer today than ever: “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

There is no honor, no respect for any legislator who serves for 20, 30, or 40 years like Moscow Mitch McConnell. I trust no one in power, and the more power they have, the less I trust them.

MONEY SPENT, MONEY WASTED

The 435 members of the House and the 100 members of the Senate make base salaries of $174,000 each year. That amounts to about 94 million dollars each year wasted, not including bonuses and the best healthcare money can buy. We deserve better, but it will not happen in my lifetime.

The least we could expect is effort for their undeserved wages. The average member of Congress spends 100 days a year in Washington. A large portion of those 100 days is spent on the phone begging for donations for their next election.

We can do better, but only if every voter demands more from our elected officials.
