Does Everyone Lie? Can Anyone Be Trusted?
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Our elections are alone in the world in the fact that they
seem to last forever. No other developed nation has such a lengthy campaign
season. The longest period of time in any developed nation is three months.
Something we all hate are the endless number of political
ads on television.
Let me preface this story by stating a fact: television ads
should not be allowed. What they tell us cannot be accepted as fact, and should
not be relevant in decisions related to voting. Okay, now the rest.
The FCC has powers and laws which can prevent content on
television which is lascivious, promotes violence and criminal activity, and
claims that are baseless and in direct opposition to the facts. My question is,
why don’t they do something about this travesty? I know the answer and it’s
always the same: money.
Network television is estimated to receive $12.32 billion in
additional income during the campaign season. Combine this amount with the
expected amount spent by candidates, $15 billion, and that adds up to about $28
billion wasted and could have been used to improve the lives of the American
people. It could pay for healthcare for everyone. It could pay for the
education of our poorest but qualified students. It could be used to find a
cure for many diseases. Instead, it is wasted on men and women’s ambitions to receive
positions in our government and do nothing but take our tax money.
Let’s do the right thing, the common sense thing, and pass a
law that our campaign season cannot begin before August 1st in any
election year, and end on election day.
It will never work: our elected officials are too needy and
greedy, and continue to prove that they have none of the qualities needed to
lead our country. Professional politicians cannot be trusted because they have
not earned our respect.
