Did you Know that in 2023 Radical Muslim Terrorists Killed at Least 46,728 Americans?
Republicans are fuming. When the statistics about terrorism
in 2023 were revealed, showing 46,728 Americans died from gunshot wounds at the
hands of radical Muslim terrorists, they demanded action.
Of course, none of this is true. The following facts about
deaths in America from the use of a gun are the result of suicides, domestic
violence, and domestic terrorism. Republicans don’t care about any of these
deaths. They cannot blame outside sources, and refuse to admit how badly they
have failed the American people for decades.
America has many “firsts.” Unfortunately, most of the
actions taken by our leaders are moronic and harmful to the intent of our
Founding Fathers. Over the last nine years, I have learned to accept what I
already knew deep inside: the United States is the most racist and bigoted
nation in the free world. More than one-half of all 340 million Americans hate
people of color, all people from ethnic backgrounds which are not from Western
Europe. For most Americans, the only acceptable religion is the one founded on
pagan beliefs and fairy tales, Christianity. For these fake Americans who fail
to believe that all men are created equal, the LGBTQ community remains a
pariah. Most of our nation’s people fear everything they don’t understand.
Rather than learn something new, they hide in their own past which is dark and
dismal. For most Americans, women remain second and even third-class citizens.
The recent election proved that they are willing to shred the Constitution and
accept fascism as the new form of government in Washington.
Most Americans accept the growth of gun violence in America
hiding behind the most poorly written Amendment in the Bill of Rights. The Second
Amendment is ambiguous and undefined. There is no provision in the Amendment which
prevents restricted access to weapons of mass destruction by regular citizens.
Comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases is not forbidden by the
Second Amendment. However, the profits of gun manufacturers and gun sellers are
more important than the lives of tens-of-thousands of lives lost each year.
Here are a few statistics which are of no importance to the
NRA gun lobby and their gun nuts.
[In 2023, 46,728 people died from gun violence in the
United States, which is the third-highest number of gun-related deaths ever
recorded. This was a 3% decline from 2022, but there were some other notable
trends.
In 2023, 27,300 people died by firearm suicide in the United
States, a record high. This was a 1.5% increase from the previous year.
More than 2,800 women die in gun homicides each year. Gun
homicides increased by 40% for women from 2018 to 2022. Black women experienced
a 52% increase, while white women experienced a 19% increase.]
Since 2017, there have been more mass shootings each year
than days on the calendar. Most become local news, never reported nationally
unless the number of deaths is greater than one or two.
Mass shootings have become so commonplace few Americans pay
any attention to the stories in the newspapers and online. Television news fails
to report most of the shootings because they are no longer in the category of “sensationalism.”
Let’s put this unforgivable number of 46,728 in perspective.
The illegal war in Vietnam began in 1955 and ended in an
embarrassing retreat in 1975. More than 58,000 lives were lost over that
20-year period.
The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began in 2001 and ended in
2021. The number of deaths from both illegal and immoral wars was more than
7,000.
To paraphrase an NRA slogan: “people don’t kill people, people
with guns kill people.”
In the late 20th century I read an article written
by a noted psychiatrist. He explained the reason why the number of deaths from
guns was escalating. He said, “it’s impersonal.” If a person was angry enough
to take violent action against another human being, and was forced to engage in
physical contact, it is highly unlikely that the result would be the death of
one or both combatants.
However, it is much easier to stand across the fence from
your neighbor and pull the trigger on a gun.
Final facts: America is the only country in the world of
developed nations without two necessities: universal healthcare and
restrictions on gun ownership. Anyone can purchase any type of gun at any time
in our country if they have the money. The few weak restrictions our nation has
are rarely enforced if cash is in the discussion.
One more irrefutable fact: no average citizen needs a weapon
which was created for a single purpose: to kill as many humans as possible in
the shortest period of time. Assault rifles should not be in the possession of
anyone other than our military: this includes law enforcement. Also unnecessary
are the high-output magazines used by these weapons of mass destruction.
I am not opposed to gun ownership, but I am opposed to the
lack of common sense displayed by our government and the NRA.
