A Short Summation of the 97th Oscars
I grew up in Los Angeles. My
brother and I walked by the MGM studios every day in the summer as we walked to
the municipal pool. At the end of our walk, the Desilu studios were built just
a few years later. Like most families in my generation, we were considered ‘poor.’
Television was the majority of our entertainment. On Saturdays when our single
mother worked overtime, we each received a dollar to go to the movies: always a
double feature. I have always loved movies of every genre.
I always watch the Academy Awards;
the Oscars. The best hosts were Bob Hope and Johnny Carson. Others ranged from
very good to complete failures. Last
evening’s host, Conan Obrien, was somewhere in between. Whoever directed the 97th
Oscars failed. The show was mostly boring.
However, the worst part of the
evening involved many of the clothes worn by the women. You might notice that I
didn’t say “gowns” because I don’t know what they were.
It is not uncommon to see failures
by the most famous designers, but I have no idea what they were thinking. Many
of the outfits appeared to be caricatures which might have appeared in “Mad
Magazine.”
Most notable were the “clothes”
worn by Ariana Grande and Queen Latifa. I love them both. However Ms. Grande
appeared to be wearing a coffee table from the waist down. Ms. Latifa looked like
she was being choked by the material above her shoulders.
The one exception in the evening
was the form-fitting gown worn by one of the most beautiful women in the world:
Halle Berry. She was outstanding in a reflective gown which proudly displayed
her fantastic figure.
It is no secret that the best
awards show is the Golden Globes. It is fun and always entertaining.
It is also no secret that the
Oscars is the most prestigious. However, the show is often pompous and layered
in arrogance.
Last night I found myself very
disappointed.
