  Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart I was watching the movie, “White House Down” for the third or fourth time today. It was first released in 2013.   I couldn’t help but notice the comparison between the characters who violently invaded the White House in the film, and the traitors who attempted to end democracy on January 6, 2021, the darkest day in American history, when they stormed the Capitol Building. If January 6 had happened prior to the release of the movie, it would have been easy to see the relationship between the characters portrayed by the actors and the real villains who violently invaded the building which houses our legislative branch in 2021. They shared beliefs in racism, bigotry, and displayed a desire to enact massive violence against our perceived enemies, all Muslims. Trump decided to march from the White House to St. John’s Church for the sole purpose of obtaining a photo op to distract his followers from his failing attempt to win reelection. To reach St. John’s Church, he had to walk through Lafayette Park. A crowd of protestors filled a large part of the park. Trump called in members of the National Guard to lead the procession, and armed them with rubber bullets and tear gas. His plan was successful and an embarrassment for all Americans. Once again, our military was forced to attack peaceful citizens exercising their First Amendment rights for political reasons. Never forget Kent State. This was my bill for three-and-a-half days of medical care in Northern Nevada. My wife will be 74 this year; I am 78. Our only income is from Social Security. We pay our bills, and with about a 40 percent increase in our grocery bill, and a 60 percent increase in our gas and electric bill, we have nothing left at the end of each month. We paid into Social Security and Medicare for all of our working years, about 40 for each of us. We have not been able to pay for Medicare part B, and also pay our house payment. I have heard a few politicians attempt to explain why the United States continues the archaic and senseless policy of altering time every six months. It’s called “daylight savings time.” They failed. This process began a long time ago, on March 31, 1918. It is commonly believed that the reason for DST was to give more daylight hours to farmers during the growing and harvest seasons. However, farmers were opposed to the bill. It appears that congress was supporting the tourism and recreation-based industries. In 1970, DST was extended and became permanent. A probable energy crisis encouraged congress to consider the measure, and it was agreed to by both parties.
