God Made One, Big Mistake, and He Knew It

Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart

I was a much younger man. One day I was reading the newspaper and all the news was so bad, so depressing, I thought to myself: “God made one, big mistake: He created man.”

I didn’t even know that He knew it until I happened to read it in Genesis one day. I was mostly interested in the New Testament, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

[6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”]

The difference in what I felt was about the animals, our oceans, the earth, and the sky. Prior to the industrialization of our planet, mankind killed animals for necessity: food, clothing, and even housing. When I was much younger, I learned that men killed animals for sport, and abused them for “fun.”

I began paying attention to information about how rapidly our nation’s climate was changing. In my own city of Los Angeles the skies were brown on any day without a breeze or the wind. I love the ocean: I took advantage of how near the shores of the Pacific were to my home, and swam and body surfed whenever possible. However, I began to see changes. More and more refuse was floating in the waters.

[The earliest significant pipeline disaster in the US was on April 18, 1861, in Tidioute, Pennsylvania, when benzene gas from a newly drilled oil well ignited, creating a large fiery explosion that killed 15 people and injured 34. Other early incidents, such as an 1860 "gasometer" explosion in New Orleans and the 1863 failure of the first prototype pipeline, also show that pipeline disasters occurred very early in the history of oil and gas production and transportation.]

When you read, and do not rely on the “boob tube” for ‘everything you need to know,’ your education begins.

I was in my 20’s when I learned of the dangers posed by petroleum products. Carbon Dioxide emissions from internal combustion engines were the greatest culprits. A second contributor to pollution came from factories operated by large corporations which used petroleum products and coal to fuel their huge plants.

I was 23 on January 28, 1969, working for an airline at LAX. On the front page of the Los Angles Times was a picture of an explosion. Union Oil had begun drilling its fifth offshore oil well five miles from one of the most beautiful cities in California; Santa Barbara. The well blew out, spewing oil and gas. The explosion cracked the sea floor in 5 places and released 1,000 gallons of oil an hour. A second blow out in a different well followed on February 24th. Eventually, the California coastline would be devastated by 3 million gallons of crude—the largest oil spill in the nation’s history until the Exxon Valdez 20 years later. The destruction was both so immense and so visible that it sparked the environmental advocacy movement as we know it.

“The love of money is the root of all evil.” This is especially true in America whose national motto became “profit before people” in the late 1900’s.

The ultimate proof that God made mistakes is happening today in our nation’s capital and spreading to every state in the Union.

One of our nation’s two political parties denies the existence of “climate change caused by mankind.” They and their fascist leader support drilling for gas and oil in all of our nation’s most beautiful, natural locations from the pristine areas located in our last frontier, Alaska, to the waters adjacent to the sandy beaches in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. They have no concern for the damage to our nation’s wildlife and marine life, which is inevitable. Although they are lying, they claim the damage to our air, water, and soil will be “minimal,” the same promises made more than 100 years ago.

Big oil is facing a great challenge to its enormous profits. Electric vehicles are immensely popular. Although they have been around for decades, batteries which would allow hundreds of miles on a single charge did not exist. Every major company which manufactures a variety of vehicles has retooled its factories, focused on building more electric and hybrid vehicles at lower cost to consumers.

Obstructionists in Washington continue to support the petroleum industry and their subsidies, which are nothing but tax breaks.

The ultimate truth about God brings two questions: is God still alive, or is He making another huge mistake by allowing those who believe in and praise Him to suffer, while the Antichrist in the White House destroys everything good about their country?
