Netanyahu is The Problem, Not the People of Israel
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
One of the great stories of the 20th century was
the recognition of Israel as a State, a Nation, by the United Nations. A 1960
movie starring Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Lee J. Cobb, and Sal Mineo titled “Exodus”
told the story: a story of courage and determination like no other.
Although the movie was nearly three-and-one-half hours long,
it was inspiring and fascinating. However, its length and repetition of the
facts was criticized by Paul Newman and others involved in the production.
This cannot diminish the importance of a real-life story,
but it was in its own way a prophecy of what was yet to come.
When Israel’s right to exist was recognized in 1948. 40
years later, in 1988, leaders of the Palestinian people in the area applied for
equal representation by the United Nations. Their request was denied when the
United States and Great Britain, both members of the Security Council, vetoed
their application.
The history of the people of Israel and the people of
Palestine, formerly known as “Philistines,” began long before the existence of
the United States and the United Nations.
[By more than 1,000 years, “Israel” predates “Palestine.”
The land then became home primarily to an Arab population, again for more than
a millennium. Both Jews and Arabs thus have a legitimate claim to the land. The
Israeli Palestinian conflict has seen myriad wrongs and brutalities on both
sides.]
The conflict between the Jews and Arabs intensified after
Great Britain took control of the area after the end of WWI. Arabs were the
majority, and Jews the minority. When England allowed the Jews to create what
later became a State, a series of small wars began called “intifadas.”
Every request for recognition and Statehood by leaders of
the Palestinian people has been denied. Although supported by the majority of
nations, the petitions of the Palestinian people have been rejected thanks to
the support of Israel’s biggest ally, the United States of America.
Although efforts by leaders of nations in the region and
beyond, including the United States, to rectify the situation, peace has been
non-existent in the region for generations.
In 1987, an Islamic extremist group called Hamas infiltrated
the Palestinian occupied area surrounding Israel. Terrorism against the nation
of Isreal became commonplace, forcing Israel’s military to retaliate. This part
of history is what most of the world’s people remember or read in history
books.
In 1996 Benjamin Netanyahu was elected Prime Minister of
Israel. His obvious hatred for Hamas included a lack of concern for the Palestinian
people. Although there have been multiple efforts to establish discussions
between the two people by world leaders attempting to be peacemakers, Netanyahu
refused to attend any efforts to negotiate with the neighboring people of
Palestine: an unrecognized State.
Netanyahu began a policy of “land grabbing.” He approved a
policy of taking land occupied by Palestinians and making it part of Israel.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked a music festival in Israel
attended by more than 3,500 mostly young men and women. At least 260 innocent
people died at the scene and a large number of Israeli citizens were captured
and held hostage.
In June and August 2024, Israeli military forces engaged in
attacks aimed at Hamas. believed to be harbored by Palestinians in Gaza. The attacks
escalated. Missiles and bombs bombarded the area killing thousands of innocent
men, women, and children. Netanyahu has refused to agree to negotiate with all
parties involved in what can only be called ‘genocide.’
Last Tuesday, an investigation by the United Nations
revealed that more than 20,000 children in Gaza have been treated for malnutrition.
When asked about claims of famine in Gaza, Netanyahu’s response was, “There is
no starvation in Gaza”
Unfortunately for Netanyahu, the facts speak for themselves.
More than 60,000 men, women and children have been killed in
Gaza.
Nearly 150,000 have been injured.
More than one-half of those killed are women and children.
Nearly 90 percent of all Palestinians in Gaza have been
displaced.
What began as a justifiable response to the terrorist
attacks on October 7, 2023, has become an obvious effort by Netanyahu to remove
or kill all Palestinians residing in the area.
Time to look at reality, and time to end acts based on anti-Semitism.
The majority of all Jews denounce Netanyahu’s vicious attacks on the Palestinian
people.
I believed that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and others
should have been tried for war crimes after invading Iraq, and the continuation
of hostilities in Afghanistan. I believe the same action should apply to Benjamin
Netanyahu.
