Things I Never Thought I’d See
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
First, a little advice: don’t get old.
I begin with personal observations. On my next birthday, if
I get there, I will become an octogenarian. I’m lucky that my brain works as well
now as it did decades ago. However, I never thought I’d see the day when I
became incapable of simple things like walking out to get the mail, taking out
the receptacles on trash day, mowing the lawn, being able to drive a car,
washing my sheets and remaking my own bed, and cleaning my shower, among many
other normal duties. I’m not good having to rely on my bride to care for me.
She has asthma and during Covid-19, I did all the shopping. Today, the best I
can do is tag along with her. She does everything for me and never complains.
However, this article is not about me, it’s about my country
and whether or not it will survive the existence of a fascist who is defiling
our White House for a second time.
I remember 13 presidents. There were 14 inaugurations but
Trump should not be counted twice, or even once, if I had a choice. He has never
been an “American president.” Of those 13 men, only one was a great president.
John F. Kennedy was extremely patriotic, courageous,
brilliant, inspiring, the greatest public speaker I have ever known, and had an
incomparable sense of humor.
There is no argument that his personal life was a mess.
However, his actions during the two years and 10 months in service to the
American people, he was flawless.
I was in my first year of high school, when he was elected,
and in my senior year when he was murdered. For younger Americans, he was a hero,
an idol.
Other presidents deserve praise for their leadership and
accomplishments, but, in general, each of them caused more harm than good to
the expertise and integrity of those who serve in our nation’s highest office.
Fact: Nixon was the most accomplished Republican President
in modern history. From establishing a relationship with Communist China, his
creation of the EPA, ending the draft, securing the right to vote for 18 year
olds, to his efforts to halt nuclear proliferation and more, Nixon loved his
country and was a working president unlike those who succeeded him from the
right side of the aisle. History proves that the word “accomplishment” is an
antonym for the word “Republican.”
Bill Clinton rescued our nation’s economy. He surrounded
himself with extremely competent advisors and together our nation was enjoying
its greatest economic status in history. Sadly, every Democrat who succeeded
him faced similar situations. Obama revitalized an economy moving towards a
depression, created by George W. Bush, and Biden was forced to do the same after
Trump’s many failures, and also end the rising number of deaths from Covid-19.
His predecessor, a Republican, did nothing to end the deadly coronavirus
between January of 2020 until he was evicted from the White House on January
20, 2021.
What I never thought I would live to see is one old, obese,
white man who hates his country’s people become our illegitimate president not
once, but twice.
I am an original baby boomer. In my younger years, the
atmosphere across our nation was enveloped in patriotism. The allies had
defeated fascism, and the world was recovering from WWII.
In 2025, I and millions of others continue to love our
country and what it stands for. However, we despise our government. Over the
last 44 years it has become the most incompetent and corrupt in the world. With
the exception of a handful of courageous men and women, no one in the executive
branch, legislative branch, and six of the nine justices on the Supreme Court
can be trusted and are undeserving of our respect.
Like all true Americans, I never thought I would live to see
the same villainous traitors to democracy who were defeated in 1945 rise to
power and control a nation founded on freedom, equality, and the protection of
human rights.
I never thought I would see the government of the United
States and other democratic nations surrender to a bully. In my wildest dreams,
I never thought I would watch a sitting president attempt a coup: an act of
treason. I never believed it possible that any man or woman residing in the
White House would be allowed to violate the Constitution several times each
day. I never thought I’d see such a level of cowardice and hypocrisy in
Washington as I am witnessing today.
Finally, I never thought I would learn that most American
voters are ignorant, lazy, and believe everything they see and hear on the ‘boob
tube.’
Do I still have hope? A little, but it is fading a little
more each day.
The saddest feeling I have after writing about the evils of
Donald Trump and his Nazi party reveals my deep despair. Knowing that most
voters are apathetic about their responsibility when voting, I ask myself one
question every day: “Is America worth saving?”
