As a Country, Imperialism is America’s Greatest Flaw
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
From the time I was growing up in Los Angeles in the 1950’s,
I heard the adults complain about our nation’s government “sticking its nose in
the business of other countries.” I didn’t know what it meant. However, after I
graduated from high school in 1964, thanks to a teacher who inspired me, and as
it became apparent that our government was planning to participate in another
war halfway around the world, I was very aware of our country’s greatest crime:
imperialism.
Here is the definition of Imperialism: “Imperialism is a
policy or practice where a powerful nation extends its control and influence
over foreign territories, often for economic, political, or military gain,
sometimes through direct territorial acquisition and sometimes through indirect
economic or cultural dominance. It can involve the establishment of colonies,
the imposition of foreign rule, and the exploitation of resources and labor in
the subject territories, leaving a legacy of social and economic disruption.”
I remember listening to adults making remarks like, “why do
we have to be the world’s policemen?” Or, “we have enough problems in our own
country, why are we giving millions of dollars to other countries?”
We should ask the same questions today.
On June 22, 2025, Trump ordered an attack on Iran’s nuclear
facilities called “Operation Midnight Hammer.” Our military dropped at least 14
“bunker buster” bombs, and an undisclosed number of Tomahawk cruise missiles
were launched from submarines in an attempt to destroy the facilities. Like
every other military action since the end of WWII in 1945, it failed. When the
truth was revealed by a Pentagon official, Trump ordered his Secretary of
Defense, Pete, the Alcoholic, Hegseth, to fire that individual. This is what
Trump does. He attempts to cover up his mistakes by blaming others.
The failed mission cost taxpayers more than $200 million.
Throughout our nation’s 249-year history, America has
invaded other sovereign countries while lying to the American people. Our
government claims that the purpose was to “spread democracy.” The truth is far
more sinister. Remember this part of the definition of Imperialism: “---often
for economic, political, or military gain, sometimes through direct territorial
acquisition and sometimes through indirect economic or cultural dominance.”
Our government loves war. Our current illegitimate president
told his cult about his personal feelings during one of his infamous hate
rallies. “I love wars, even the nuclear kind.”
“War is good business.” The result of all military conflicts
is clear: “the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.” The loss of American
lives is nothing more than collateral damage for our government and the 902
oligarchs who control the future of 340 million Americans.
Trump’s cabinet is the least qualified in history. A perfect
example is Marco Rubio. Known as the “laziest Senator in history,” Trump placed
him in a powerful position for which he had no experience or qualifications:
Secretary of State.
Trump’s latest target is South America. Trump is attempting
to protect current leaders and replace others with men who are loyal to him and
his fascist plans for the Americas.
On September 2, Trump ordered a strike on a Venezuelan
watercraft, claiming it was transporting illicit drugs. There is not a shred of
evidence which confirms his allegation.
If I am honest, and I am, the Korean conflict, the War in
Vietnam, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq were all acts of American Imperialism.
Trump has yet to address one of the many problems he promised
to solve during the 2024 campaign. He has his own agenda: vengeance on his
enemies, and increasing his power.
