Three Campaign Promises, Three Humongous Lies, a Real Monarch, and a Wannabe King
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
This week has been interesting. Two very old men, one 77,
and one who will be 80 in just six weeks, met for tea in our White House. The
biggest differences between them are that one man is a King, and the other is supposed
to be a public servant. One has no real power, and is loved by most of his
people. The other is power-mad, and despised by three-quarters of the people he
was elected to serve. One man’s speech was articulate, and humorous at times,
while the other man rambled on about nothing and no one could understand his
gibberish.
King Charles rose to his position when his mother, Queen
Elizabeth, passed away. He was first in line to receive the crown. He made no
promises, and simply accepted the honor that was his by birthright.
Trump won a second controversial election with the
assistance of Vladimir Putin and the United States Supreme Court. He made many
promises, more accurately false promises, in a desperate effort to win the
election. His most important guarantees were to end inflation on day one, end
the war in Ukraine on day one, and an all-important promise to prevent our
nation from engaging in another war on foreign land.
Hey, Trump supporters: how’s he doing?
AMERICA’S SHAME
I am old enough to remember watching John Kennedy, Bill Clinton,
and Barack Obama preparing to give a speech. The cheers began as they walked towards
the stage as the crowd anxiously waited to hear their words of encouragement
and hope.
Although Trump continues to have a loyal cult, they are
fewer in number. Inside their minds they groan as he steps in front of the
microphones, knowing that what he is going to say has been said many times
before, and the majority of his words will be in praise of his imagined “greatness.”
The worst is knowing that it will ramble on for more than one hour.
Trump is the reason America has become the focus of jokes
around the world.
AUTOCRATS ARE BORING WHILE GREAT LEADERS INSPIRE US
In the 21st century, there remain multiple
autocrats who rule over their subjects without mercy or compassion. You know
most of their names: Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the
leaders of all theocracies, including the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
These men serve themselves and ignore the needs, hopes, and
dreams of the men, women, and children who struggle to survive, believing that their
only purpose is to serve one man with all of the power and wealth.
I cannot honestly say that I have witnessed a large number
of great world leaders in my lifetime. Power is an aphrodisiac for most men, and
absolute power eventually corrupts even the best of men who once had good
intentions. There have been great leaders who champion movements which alter
the future of every man, woman, and child in the world.
JUST A FEW EXAMPLES AND REAGAN, GEORGE W. BUSH, AND TRUMP
ARE NOT AMONG THEM
Although he died in the year prior to my birth, his list of
accomplishments prove that he was the greatest President in America’s history.
Franklin D. Roosevelt truly was “the people’s president.” He
fought for the working class, ensuring they were treated fairly by their
employers and their rights were protected.
When Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Army invaded Poland, FDR was
reluctant to place our nation into what would surely become another World War.
However, he prepared our nation for the possibility. Our factories and our
people were informed of what was happening in Europe. When Hitler’s ally, the Emperor
of Japan, decided to attack our Naval Fleet docked in Pearl Harbor, FDR had the
full support of the American people. He continued to lead and guide us until
his death in 1945.
England had its own great leader to give them hope that they
would survive the brutal attacks from the Luftwaffe, and eventually become
victorious.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill was the right man at the
right time. His rhetoric was inspirational, and his leadership style unmatched
in the 20t.h century.
In my life, one man stands out as the greatest example of
why it is important to fight for the preservation of Democracy, and for the
protection of the rights promised to every man, woman, and child in America by
the Constitution, in most situations whether or not he or she is a citizen.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the greatest leader in the mid-twentieth
century. He led the fight for civil rights in the 1960’s, not with angry speech
and violent action, but with a display of exceptional intelligence, and a
consistent message that all men are created equal and love always conquers
hate.
There will never be another like him.
One more, and it’s personal.
In 1960, I graduated from St. Gerard Majella’s Elementary
School, and in the fall attended my freshman year at St Bernard High School.
In November of 1960, our nation would elect a new president.
My interest in politics began in 1956, but this election felt personal.
The Democratic nominee was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Senator
from Massachusetts. His opponent was former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon, a
Republican.
Like me, Kennedy was a Catholic. He was young,, energetic,
handsome, charismatic, and extremely intelligent. With a display of great
courage and fortitude, He led us through “13 days in October” when everyone
believed a nuclear war was inevitable.
His death crushed my spirit and broke my heart. A true hero
had been taken from America’s young men and women.
“NO KINGS,” NO DICTATORS, AND ONLY A PATRIOTIC AMERICAN CAN
BE OUR NATION’S PRESIDENT
Trump serves Trump and no one else. Everything in his nearly
80 years has been focused on his own desires for pleasure, fame, and fortune.
Donald Trump is not an American president and confirms the
fact that he is not a leader.
