Not Abortion Rights: Women’s Rights
Op-ed by

Women continue their fight for equality. Whenever a
Republican is in the Oval Office, women’s rights take two steps backwards for
every step they gained during a Democratic administration.
Before I move deeper into my article, I feel that I must vent
my frustration. This begins with one, simple fact: old, white men have no right
to make decisions for women when the issue has any relationship to their
ability to reproduce. The situation is unrelatable for men who continue to believe
that women have a single purpose: to serve the needs of men.
That said, let’s take a realistic look at an issue which should
not be included in the many reasons we choose one candidate over another when
we vote: abortion.
WOMEN CONTINUE TO BE SECOND AND EVEN THIRD-CLASS CITIZENS
In America, white women were not allowed to vote until 1920.
Black women were forced to wait for their Constitutional right until 1965.
For 49 years, women were protected by federal law when they
decided to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. On June 24, 2022, a stacked, politically
biased, and corrupt Supreme Court overturned a previous Court decision in 1973
known as Roe v Wade. This abuse of power by Justices Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch,
Kavanaugh, and Barrett, set women’s struggle for equal rights under the law
backwards for one half century, and our nation’s struggle to move forward and
join other developed nations even farther.
The Christian Religious Right would like you to believe that
the issue of abortion is related to the confirmed existence of a fetus which
may only be an inch or two inches long. This is a form gaslighting and even
catfishing. The decision to end an unwanted pregnancy is in reality a woman’s
right to decide the future of her own physical and mental health. This
extremely difficult decision must be hers and hers alone.
THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH
Let’s look at a fact no one else will admit. If men were the
sex that became pregnant, this situation would be far, far different. Men would
be allowed to have abortions until the very minute they began to feel labor
pains. Only in America.
What men fear is the truth. Not only are women capable of
performing equally with men in the workplace and everywhere else, they are frequently
superior. It depends on the situation.
In the 21st century, a higher percentage of women
are voting than men. More women are running for public office in our city,
state, and federal governments. More women are registered at our colleges and
universities than men. Many young women are leaving menial jobs and going back
to college to earn their degrees. A major change is evident when we look at the
decrease in the number of births in America each year. A growing number of
white women are choosing lifestyle over motherhood. Bearing children is not
always their first choice: their careers have taken precedence. The ultimate
goal is to end any and all dependence on the males of the species.
To the men who continue to believe that women are inferior
to men, and should be subservient to the needs of the superior sex, remember
one fact. In the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton easily defeated Trump in the
popular vote.
IGNORE THE HALF-TRUTHS FROM THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA
Right to lifers base their beliefs on those of the Christian
religion. They ignore the fact that more innocent deaths occurred in history
during the Crusades and the Spanish inquisition, than in wars waged for any
other cause. If you read the New Testament, I challenge you to find any situation
when Jesus Christ instructed His followers to wage wars in His name.
True Christians, Muslims, Jews, and followers of any other
legitimate religion value all life. This includes the right to care for
ourselves as we believe, not based on the beliefs of politicians or religious
leaders.
The issue of abortion is founded in a struggle for human
rights.
Our Founding Fathers created a nation which promises to
protect individual rights. However, no one is allowed to exercise those rights
if they pose a danger to others. Every woman, every man, must be allowed to
make decisions about their personal lives, regardless of the issue. This is
America.
From the day I can remember when my thoughts began to
involve more than what I wanted for breakfast the next morning, I have been a
feminist. All around me were women who must have felt disrespected. This
includes my own mother, who was a single parent. I have never been able to
understand this situation.
I might have been naïve. Every morning, before we began a
school day, my class recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I actually believed the
last few words: “with liberty and justice for all.”
Today, May 19, 2026, I am still waiting to see those six
words become a reality.
