An Open Letter to Congress: Hey Assholes, Do Something

I have been writing for newspapers, online publications, and
my own blog, “TheWiseOldFart,” for more than 12 years. I haven’t checked, but I
have no doubt that I have written more articles about mass shootings and gun
violence than any other subject with the exception of America’s biggest enemy,
Donald Trump. I am angry, and disgusted that nothing has been done in
Washington to ease the pain and fear of millions of our nation’s people.
This week has been like any other week in America. Normal
men, women, and children have been going about their lives without any idea
that this might be their last day on earth, or they might be seriously injured
by a bullet from a weapon of mass destruction. Over the Father’s Day weekend
and celebrations on Juneteenth 50 Americans were shot and several lives were
lost.
The most recent assault on our freedom happened on Friday,
June 21, in Fordyce, Arkansas..
Three persons were killed and 10 injured at a grocery store
at 11:30 in the morning about 70 miles south of Little Rock. The alleged
perpetrator was shot but not killed by law enforcement, and will be charged
with capital murder.
IT HAS BEOME SOP THAT THE WEAPON USED WAS NOT REPORTED BY
LAW ENFORCEMENT IMMEDIATELY
Three of the injured are in critical condition. Two law
enforcement officers were shot, but their injuries are not serious. No one had
the courage to identify the type of weapon used in the assault. However, it
appears to be a weapon with the capability of discharging multiple rounds of
ammunition in a very short period of time.
Once again, a Trump paid liar, Arkansas Governor Sarah
Huckabee Sanders, offered a meaningless response because she is owned by the
NRA.
“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting in Fordyce, and
I’m in constant contact with State Police at the scene. I am thankful to law
enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save
lives. My prayers are with the victims and all those impacted by this horrific
incident.”
Let’s be honest, like other fake Republicans she doesn’t
give a damn about the victims. After every reported mass shooting, gun sellers
and gun manufacturers celebrate as the sale of guns experiences a surge in
sales.
STANDARD RESPONSE FROM THE RIGHT
Republicans, who receive massive donations from the NRA,
offer a single response: thoughts and prayers. Nothing else has happened for
far too many years.
A sampling of these tragedies are Sandy Hook Elementary
School in December of 2012 when 20 very young children and six educators were
slaughtered by a single gunman in possession of a military assault rifle: Las
Vegas, Nevada, in October of 2017 when a lone gunman, armed with a dozen
assault rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and bump stocks took the
lives of 58 innocent Americans, and injured more than 400: In October of 2017,
a lone gunman, armed with an assault rifle, killed 26 men, women, and children
inside of a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. 22 were injured: on Valentines
Day, 2018, a lone gunman, armed with an assault rifle, took the lives of 17
students and educators, while injuring 17 others at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas
High School in Parkland, Florida.
In the real world, any nation’s government would have acted
immediately after each of these senseless tragedies. However, in America, the
profits of gun manufacturers and gun sellers, with assistance from the NRA gun
lobby, took precedence over the lives of innocent Americans. Our nation’s government
is not only dysfunctional, it has become a bad joke played on the American
people.
IT'S PAST TIME FOR THE OLD, WHITE, MEN IN WASHINGTON TO GET
OFF THEIR FAT ASSES AND DO SOMETHING
The biggest problem in Washington is that our elected
officials no longer represent the American people. Their loyalties are to
special interests, themselves, and in many cases, foreign governments.
To take action against domestic terrorism would cost many professional
politicians millions of dollars in campaign contributions. The lives of these
men and women include great wealth and prestige, which is more important than
the future and lifestyle of the average man or woman.
It's time to “clean house” in Washington. Without term
limits, our legislative and judicial branches have become corrupt and
completely dysfunctional. All hope is lost if a complete renovation of our
political structure does not begin immediately.
How much longer can our nation survive with traitors such as
Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene in control of our nation’s future?
