Bigly Bombs, Bigly Cost, and a Bigly To Do About Nothing
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Trump is a bully. Using the largest non-nuclear bombs ever
made in the U.S. was the ultimate act of a coward who has others do his
fighting for him.
Of course, there was a cost to the American people when our
military dropped 14 bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities. At more than $5,000,000
each, the cost was greater than 100 million dollars. It’s true that the older a
man gets, the more expensive his toys become.
Although Trump and his woefully unqualified Secretary of
Defense, Pete Hegseth, claimed that Iran’s efforts to construct nuclear weapons
was “obliterated,” experts report that the military of the United States once
again failed to attain its goals.
[Rafael Grossi, who heads the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), said that US strikes on three sites a week ago had caused
"severe damage" but it was not "total".]
[Mr. Grossi told CBS News: "The capacities they have
are there. They can have, you know, in a matter of months, I would say, a few
cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than
that.
"But as I said, frankly speaking, one cannot claim that
everything has disappeared and there is nothing there."]
Members of the DIA claimed the damage was minimal.
[Two of the people familiar with the assessment said Iran’s
stockpile of enriched uranium was not destroyed. One of the people said the
centrifuges are largely “intact.” Another source said that the intelligence
assessed enriched uranium was moved out of the sites prior to the US strikes.
“So the (DIA) assessment is that the US set them back maybe
a few months, tops,” this person added.]
Let’s break this down to reality.
Trump had a chance to play the role of a powerful and decisive
leader. Our military leaders, residing in the Pentagon, who lost every war
since WWII, had a chance to play with their overpriced toys. They failed. Overall
public opinion opposed any military action in the Middle East. The disastrous failures
in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to hang over our heads. They are a major
reason why the national debt is so enormous, our grandchildren will be paying
for the mistakes of another Republican president.
Old, white men who amass great power, will take every
opportunity to use that power.
One of the biggest lies Trump ever told was when he had someone
write a book for him. It was likely Trump who chose the misleading title: “The
Art of the Deal.”
If there is one thing everyone knows, Trump is not a
negotiator, a diplomat. He has no desire and no talent for deliberation and
compromise. His rash decision to bomb Iran is a perfect example of overreaction
while ignoring the will of the people he swore to serve.
Trump will forever be remembered as America’s biggest
mistake.
