“It’s the Economy, Stupid”

Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart

If you ask any working-class person in any democratic nation, “what is the most important issue in any election,” the answer will always be “the economy.”

Uninformed voters believed Trump’s baseless braggadocio between 2017 and 2021. He claimed that America’s recovering economy was his accomplishment, although facts prove that every positive action began during President Obama’s administration and was responsible for the growth of America’s economy. The choice to choose ignorance over fact was a critical fact in Trump’s illegitimate victory in 2024.

A little history ignored by voters who, like Trump, “learn everything they need to know from television.”

In 1992 Bill Clinton was elected. The primary reason for his victory was the fact that the fiscal policies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush greatly diminished the quality of life for the majority, and increased the national debt by more than a trillion dollars.

When Clinton left office in 2001, the economy of the United States was flourishing.

In 2008, America was in the “Great Recession.” The housing market had crashed, and unemployment was escalating rapidly. The failed economic policy of George W. Bush, combined with his choice to place our country in two costly and unwinnable wars, nearly bankrupted the United States of America.

When Barack Obama took office in 2009, he brought with him a group of experienced and accomplished professionals who acted immediately to save America from a second depression, and rebuild a totally failed economy. After two successful terms, he left office in 2017.

Your illegitimately elected president, Donald John Trump, took office on January 20, 2017. He inherited a growing economy and immediately moved America backwards.

He gave huge tax cuts to the super-rich while ignoring the needs of the many. He, like his three Republican predecessors, adopted a fiscal policy known as “trickle-down economics.” To repeat an old axiom, “the rich got richer, and the poor got poorer.”

The worst was yet to come. In December of 2019, Trump was warned of an approaching healthcare emergency. An aide assigned to read the President’s Daily Brief informed your illegitimate president that a new coronavirus was discovered in China and appeared to be moving west.

Trump ignored the information. In January of 2020, reporters asked Trump about the news reports claiming that Covid-19 was indeed spreading and had arrived in Europe. People were dying.

Trump’s response was very telling. He told the press that “America is better prepared; it will just go away.” He did nothing to protect 330 million people, ignoring the suggestions of the CDC and the WHO.

Each time he was asked about the dangers of Covid-19, his response was consistent: “it will just go away.”

When Americans began to die in March, Trump offered a solution: “drink bleach.”

By the end of 2020, the death toll from Covid-19 neared one million. Our nation’s economy fell into the Great Recession. Thousands of small businesses closed their doors, unemployment rose dramatically, and a second Great Depression seemed inevitable.

When Joe Biden took office in January of 2021, he and his administration immediately formed a plan to distribute a vaccine developed by American pharmaceutical companies. Then he issued checks to every American family to aid in our nation’s economic recovery.

When President Biden left office in January 2025, America’s economy had grown to a level not seen since Bill Clinton’s administration.

Today, Trump’s second illegitimate presidency has become 100 times worse than his first. He reinstated his policy of trickle-down economics, and although he was advised against it, he placed tariffs on goods imported from nearly every nation in the world. America is sprinting towards a depression.

My point is simple: all Republicans deserve a grade of “F” when economics becomes the subject. Democrats have been forced to save our nation from bankruptcy after every Republican presidency. Even worse, in the last three presidential elections the entire Republican Party could not find a single candidate better than Trump. That may be the saddest fact I have ever written.

Do yourself and your country a favor: turn off the television and become an informed citizen. We can remove the most incompetent and corrupt men and women in history from Capitol Hill and replace them with people who care about all 340 million American citizens.
