Abortion, 1960 to 2026
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Most people don’t want to talk about it. What was once a
personal matter has become a major issue in American politics, mostly the
result of right-wing politicians close association with the Christian Religious
Right: a major violation of the First Amendment.
Abortions did not begin in the latter half of the 20th
century, women had been performing them in hazardous manner long before I was
born in 1946. Sometimes they received the assistance of a friend, and on rare
occasions a nurse. Death from infections or exsanguination occurred frequently.
Before the sexual revolution in the 1960’s, a single woman
who enjoyed sexual relations equal to those of men were looked down upon. The
only easily accessible form of birth control were condoms. These clumsy devices
were uncomfortable for both the male and female partners.
ONE LITTLE PILL CHANGED MILLIONS OF LIVES FOREVER.
In May of 1960, before I began high school in September, the
FDA approved the “oral contraceptive”, commonly known as “the pill.” Thus began
the “sexual revolution.” Worries about pregnancy after consensual sex were
reduced to a very small percentage.
For situations based on rape, incest, or the physical health
of the fetus or the mother, illegal abortions continued.
ROE V WADE PROTECTS THE RIGHTS OF ALL WOMEN
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States
upheld the Constitution, and therefore the rights of all women to make
decisions about their personal mental and physical health. Roe v Wade became
the law of the land and would exist for the next 49 years. This single decision
was a huge step in the efforts by women to gain equality with men. Abortions
became what they should have been, decisions made between one woman and her
doctor.
Sadly, on June 24, 2022, six biased and corrupt justices,
under orders from Trump and Moscow Mitch McConnell, overturned the 1973
decision and once again any and all abortions were no longer protected by
federal law. Abortion regulations were referred to the states, and the
influence of the CRR.
The decision, made by Chief Justice John Roberts, and
Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy
Comey Barrett, ignored the Constitution and displayed their support for the
Christian Rligious Right. This unconstitutional lobby is one of the special
interest groups who own today’s fake Republican Party.
DESPERATION AND IGNORANCE EMPOWERED THE CRR AND ABORTION
BECAME A POLITICAL ISSUE
Over the last 45 years, as the once Grand Old Party began to
lose its base, Republicans in name only aligned themselves with the CRR, ignoring
both the Constitution and the rights of all women. A major part of their
decision was based on their personal ambitions to win elections.
This “issue” should not have become political. It should
have remained a personal decision between one woman and her doctor. It should
never have become a decision by mostly old, white men.
No man on this earth has the capability to understand what a
difficult decision it is to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
Your religious beliefs are yours alone and must not infringe
on the rights of others.
The first line of the First Amendment was unanimously
supported by the participants in the first Constitutional Convention in 1787.
It was intended to separate Church and State.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment
of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
It’s time for this country to return to a nation built on
the rule of law, and on religion or personal beliefs and emotion.
