Why Republicans Don’t Want You to Vote

Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart

First, a few questions. Election day is a national holiday in 16 nations, why not the United States? The longest campaign season in the world, other than the U.S. is three months: why does America’s begin two years before election day? Why do Republicans suppress voting rights in an obvious effort to prevent millions of Americans from exercising their First Amendment right? Why do Republicans fear voting by mail? Why did Trump lose so badly in 2020?

Each of these questions is easy to answer, but if you call yourself a Republican, you won’t want to know the truth.

ONE REASON, BASED ON HISTORICAL FACT, ANSWERS EVERY QUESTION

Most Americans support a progressive agenda. All developed countries are courageously moving forward into the 21st century, with the exception of the United States. This one fact proves that one-half of our nation’s government is not aligned with the people they are elected to serve. Their personal ambitions take precedence over the rights, needs, and wishes of all 340 million people.

Whenever the voter turnout is larger than expected, Democrats and Independents win elections. The perfect example of this fact is the record voter turnout in the 2020 election.

[In the 2020 elections, Joe Biden (D) won the presidential election. Biden received 306 electoral votes and Donald Trump (R) received 232 electoral votes. In the national popular vote, Biden received 81.2 million votes and Trump received 74.2 million votes.]

When early voting began in Nevada for the 2020 election, the parking area at every poll location I drove by was filled to capacity. I have no illusions about why the turnout set records. This election was more about removing the worst president in history from office than supporting Joe Biden.

THIS ONE FACT EXPLAINS EVERY OTHER QUESTION

For decades, red states and every Republican strategist attempted to suppress voter turnout. The idea of making Election Day a National Holiday has been presented by Democrats but blocked by Republicans.

America’s general elections last about two years, and cost  billions of dollars. This fact is based on a single fact: Republican politicians support special interests, and whichever candidate raises the most money is likely to be victorious on election day. The longer the campaign season, the larger the donations. This became a reality on January 21, 2010 when a biased Supreme Court upheld Citizens United. This guaranteed the ability of corporations to virtually donate an unlimited amount of money to any party and any candidate. It literally made a declaration that “corporations are people too.” America has become a country ruled by great wealth, rather than a nation focused on improving the lives of its people.

Gerrymandering, making polls less accessible for voters, and demanding additional identification documents are obvious efforts to make voting more difficult for low-income and impoverished Americans. Republicans and their Fuhrer, Donald Trump, claim that “massive voter fraud is a problem in Ameirca.” Totally untrue. Studies for decades prove that voter fraud is less than 0.0003 percent and 0.0025 percent.

Although Trump continues to lie and restrict voting by mail, the facts are irrefutable. Your vote is safer and more secure if sent by mail or dropped off at various locations in your state, than by casting your ballot on election day on a machine. Questions still remain about the allegations of several large tech companies after the 2024 election, claiming that Russia hacked into the voting machines in all seven swing states and guaranteed another illegitimate victory for the worst man in the world.

ONE FACT OFFERS AN UNDENIABLE TRUTH

The 1968 election was the first time I could legally vote. I remember both political parties making attempts to encourage voters to go the polls and exercise their First Amendment Right. Fearing losses, the position of Republicans on this issue has turned 180 degrees in 2026.

The final truth is clear and undeniable: the government of the United States of America is the most corrupt and incompetent in the world. We, the people, demand a complete overhaul of the system used to govern our country. We deserve better, and anything would be better than what we have today.
