Democrats Have Many Choices To Make: What Comes First?
Op-ed by TheWiseOldFart
Impeaching Donald Trump, defunding ICE, restoring funding
for the Affordable Care Act, repealing Trump’s tax breaks for the super-rich,
investigations into nearly every member of the Trump administration, defunding
Trump’s war against Iran, passing a reasonable minimum wage for all Americas: these
are just a few of the issues facing the Democratic dominated Congress when they
are sworn in on January 3rd.
If Chuck Schumer and other members of the “O G” are allowed
to control our nation’s future, whatever happens will lack urgency and courage.
If Democrats accept what really happened on November 3rd, whatever
comes first will make a statement: “we are serious about our nation’s future.”
STOP LISTENING TO THE BULLSHIT FROM THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA
The Democratic Party is taking credit for the historic
events which happened last Tuesday. The facts prove that it had little to do
with efforts by the Old Guard. Every man and women who won seats in the House,
the Senate, and races for State Governors was fighting for themselves, their
families, their friends and their neighbors. This was the first great victory
for the American people since the First Civil War.
We, the people have been ignored for decades. Instead of serving
the majority, making efforts to address the needs and wishes of the electorate,
professional politicians have ruled over us, placing their ambitions ahead of
340 million people.
As an octogenarian, I have experienced highs and lows in
numbers I cannot recall. As an original baby boomer, I grew up savoring
emotions of patriotism and hope. However, when the war in South Vietnam intensified
and escalated, I lost all faith in the men and women serving in Washington. To
this day, I ask a question which has never been answered: “what the hell were
we fighting for?”
With the exception of John F. Kennedy, I experienced more
incompetence and corruption than greatness. I witnessed the demise of the Grand
Old Party beginning with the third worst president in American history in 1981,
the failures of the second most ineffective beginning in 2001, and the worst
America will ever know in 2017.
As I aged, I watched our leaders in Washington move our
nation backwards, repeating the mistakes of our past and harming the future of
generations to come.
What happened last Tuesday was the renewal of America. These
amazing, mostly young men and women, clearly believed that our federal
government must place the majority of our nation’s people first and insist that
the super-rich care for themselves. They believed that the dreams of our
founding fathers must be preserved.
THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WERE VICTORIOUS UNDER THE DEMOCRATIC
BANNER MIST PLACE THE NNEDS OF THE MAJORITY FIRST
If this new breed of politicians is allowed to lead the way,
the first action taken by the legislature will focus on the economic welfare of
the working class. Food, gasoline, housing, and healthcare are unaffordable for
the average individual and most families. This must be priority number one. My
wife and I are members of the elderly demographic, and must be included in
every future decision made on Capitol Hill.
The future of our nation relies on the education of younger Americans. We
lose some of our finest minds every year because they simply cannot afford the
high cost demanded by our colleges and universities. Common sense must return
to Washington.
For far too long, the “American dream” has been unattainable
for most of our country’s people.
Secondly, investigations must begin and involve not only
Trump’s violations of the Constitution and criminal activity, his entire
administration, members of his party, six Supreme Court Justices, and our
military leaders in the Pentagon face serious scrutiny for their own violations
of the Law of the Land.
THE BIG CHANGE
Since 2017, Congress has accomplished virtually nothing of importance.
They have made history, but not in a good way.
When the 120th Congress is sworn in on January 3,
2027, they must take immediate action to undo the damage caused by Trump’s rule
over our nation. Congress is infamous for its lack of a work ethic, and this
must change.
The people have not spoken, they have made their voice heard
from the rooftops. We deserve better, and that “we” includes every man, woman
and child in our nation, a nation of good and diverse people who love the ideal
of what it once meant to be an “American.”
